WICHITA, Kan. — Getting back to Heartland Conference play as the season entered its final month, the Newman women's tennis team got picked up a number of impressive wins in a 7-2 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith Saturday at Riverside Park.
The Jets (13-3, 2-0 Heartland) got strong performances at all nine positions, with their two losses coming up just short and most of their wins coming in lopsided fashion, Kate Bugayenko, Tamar Tskhakaia, Ariana Raga and Marit Lemmens all won in straight sets without their opponent coming close, while Kateryna Stoianova worked to win a tiebreak in the first set before earning a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.
Newman started its day off with wins from Bugayenko and Stoianova at No. 2 doubles and Tskhakaia and Emily Wise at No. 3 doubles to get the early lead. The win by Bugayenko and Stoianova was their 10th in a row, and the 8-6 final was only the second time in that stretch that their opponent came within two games.
The Jets are back in action in their toughest swing of the season next weekend, facing St. Mary's and St. Edward's Friday and Saturday.
