LAWTON, Okla.—Closing out its conference season looking for a win that would lock up a trip to the Heartland Conference tournament, the Newman women's tennis team did just that, snagging a 5-3 victory over Texas-Permian Basin Friday afternoon.
The Jets (15-5, 3-2 Heartland) sealed up the third seed in next weekend's league championships by bouncing back after surrendering two points in doubles play. Kate Bugayenko and Kateryna Stoianova kept a doubles sweep from happening, earning an 8-4 win at No. 2.
Bugayenko kept that momentum into singles, getting a clean sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1. Vanessa Brill, Tamar Tskhakaia and Ariana Raga all added straight-set victories for Newman, dropping only eight games combined over six sets.
The Jets are back in action tomorrow for their regular season finale, staying in Oklahoma to face Cameron.
