DALLAS — Facing one of the top teams in the conference and the nation for the second time in four weeks, the Newman women's tennis team fell to St. Edward's 5-2 Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Heartland Conference Women's Tennis Championship.
The No. 43 Jets (15-7) suffered a pair of tough losses in doubles play to start the afternoon and went down 3-0 early to the No. 42 Hilltoppers (15-7). Kateryna Stoianova stopped the momentum by picking up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, and Ariana Raga added a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5, but SEU got the two wins they needed to hold on for the win.
Newman will now have to wait and see if it receives an at-large bid to the South Central Region tournament. Those selections will be released May 3.
