DALLAS — Vanessa Brill picked up the best victory of her young collegiate career, but No. 12 St. Mary's was too much for the Newman women's tennis team to get by, falling 8-1 in a Heartland Conference match Friday afternoon.
The Jets (13-4, 2-1 Heartland) saw Brill run to a relatively easy victory over Cristina Lopez, who entered as the Rattlers' top singles threat, ranked 35th in the nation and third in the South Central region. Still just a freshman, Brill topped Lopez 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to grab Newman's only point of the night.
Kate Bugayenko battled hard, but fell in a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 match at No. 1 singles to the 44th-ranked singles player in the country in Jamie Lee Denton. Bugayenko then teamed up with Kateryna Stoianova to give the No. 18-ranked doubles team in the country all it could handle in an 8-6 loss. The Jets were competitive on the other courts against the Rattlers (12-3, 2-0 Heartland) as well, but St. Mary's was able to edge out the win.
The Jets continue their tough weekend with a matchup against St. Edward's at 10 a.m. Saturday in Arlington, Texas.
