ARLINGTON, Texas — Locked into another tight battle against one of the top teams in the Heartland Conference, the Newman women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 loss to St. Edward's Saturday.
The No. 43 Jets (13-5, 2-2 Heartland) made it two straight days against nationally-ranked competition against the No. 41 Hilltoppers (14-4, 4-0 Heartland), led by Kateryna Stoianova, who worked for a 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 victory over Marissa Williams at No. 3 singles.
Stoianova then teamed up with Kate Bugayenko to earn an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles over Williams and Anjali Sampath, who entered the day ranked No. 10 in the South Central region.
Marit Lemmens picked up Newman's third point of the day, grabbing a tough 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles. All six singles matches were tight, including four three-set matches that were split evenly by the two teams, with Vanessa Brill and Ariana Raga falling in close ones.
The Jets are back in action Tuesday, when they host Emporia State.
