SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Newman women's basketball team completed its first of two back-to-back conference weekend road trips by taking on St. Mary's Saturday afternoon, but dropped a 67-65 nail-biter.
KEY SEQUENCE
The biggest moment in the game would come when the Jets (13-6, 3-4 Heartland) were down to the Rattlers (15-3, 7-1 Heartland) 65-62 with 10 seconds left in the game.
Natalia Hausmann wouldn't let Newman go out quietly by knocking down a 3-pointer to even up the score at 65 with seven seconds left in regulation, however St. Mary's would get the last shot of the contest to roll in and would hold on to a 67-65 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Hannah Alexander would get the first Newman points of the game with a 3-pointer to put the score at 3-2 early on. Alexander scored all eight of the Jet points in the first quarter, which put the score at 18-8 in favor of the Rattlers after one quarter of play.
-Newman was trailing St. Mary's 22-13 with 7:01 to play in the second quarter but a quick 10-0 run for the Jets would give them a 23-22 lead with 4:07 to play in the first half.
Mali Wright got a layup to go in, while Alexander hit two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws to complete the 10-0 run.
-Hausmann would get back-to-back layups to go in in the final minute of the first half to inch closer to the St. Mary's lead, which put the score at 29-27 heading into intermission.
-Wright would score the first six points for the Jets to open up the third quarter of play and then added four points on the back end of the third to have 10 points for the third quarter alone. St. Mary's would take a 53-46 lead into the final quarter of play however.
-The Jets would open the fourth quarter of play on a 10-2 run and take a 56-55 lead with 6:09 to go, which was the first Newman lead since the 4:07 mark in the second quarter when the score was 23-22. During the 10-2 run Alexander led the way with seven points, while Wright added two and
Bria DeGrate one.
-Newman would trail by three points with 10 seconds to go in the contest, Hausmann would connect on a 3-pointer to tie the score at 65 all but the Rattlers would get a layup to fall in, in the final seconds of the game and win 67-65.

NOTES
-Alexander had a career-high 33 points against St. Mary's today. Her previous career-high was against Rogers State on the road back on Jan. 2 of this season when she scored 24 points. Not only did she lead the way in points but she also had the most rebounds for the Jets with eight boards.
-The Jets forced 19 turnovers this afternoon, which is the 17th game this season that they have at least forced 15 or more turnovers in a game.

The Jets hit the road again next weekend by traveling to Oklahoma Christian Thursday evening and St. Edward's Saturday afternoon.
