WICHITA, Kan. —The Newman women's basketball team was able to come away with the victory against No. 11 Emporia State 74-66. The Jets were able to get some big stops late in the fourth, along with some clutch shots from players off the bench in Monday night's victory.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (5-2) were looking at a tied game with seven minutes remaining in the fourth, when forward Abbey George was able to get a corner three to give the Jets the lead over the Hornets (2-2). That energy spark, with the help of the defense causing turnovers and getting stops, the Jets were propelled to a victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Jets started off the game a little slow, but the defense was able to pick up the slack. Toward the middle of the quarter, the offense was able to get started with the help of Bria DeGrate off the bench providing the spark the Jets needed. The Jets would finish the first quarter tied at 16.
-The second quarter was slow for the Jets as well. The Hornets were able to find holes in the Jet defense and the Jets' offense began to slow down after a couple missed jump shots and layups. Going into the final minutes of the first half the Jets came back to life offensively, creating shots and allowing the offense to run smoother.
-In the third quarter the Jets bounced back quickly after the first half the defense was able to get stops and the offense began to really click. With help from George, who had four points and three rebounds, and Bria DeGrate, who had eight points, the Jets took the lead at the end of the quarter 48-46.
-The fourth quarter began with a lot of energy from the Jets, and they ran with it the whole quarter. Hayley Albers, who had 14 points and five rebounds, provided a big spark the Jets needed to add on to their lead. The defense from Nia Roberts, Dede Johnson and DeGrate was good getting stops, steals and drawing turnovers. The Jets kept up with their offense adding to lead late and getting the victory 74-66.
NOTES
-The Jets bench was able to provide a spark offensively outscoring the Hornets 40-23.
-Albers and DeGrate were really good for the Jets providing the offense late and scoring in bunches in the fourth quarter.
-This win snapped a three game losing streak against the Hornets, and was Newman's first win against the in-state foe since 2011-12.
