Jets Clip Washburn With Smothering Second Half

 WICHITA, Kan. —The Newman women's basketball team won Tuesday against an MIAA opponent in Washburn 52-45. The Jets were able to bounce back after two tough losses with smothering defense against the Ichabods.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (6-4) were looking at a 32-30 deficit with 7:02 left in the third quarter after Nia Roberts hit a layup. After the defense was able to get some timely stops against the Ichabods (6-1), the Jets were able to take that momentum into its own game as they kept getting contribution from both starters and the bench.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The first quarter for the Jets was a slow start, as the Jets were looking at a 6-0 deficit with 6:58 remaining on the clock. With the help of some good defense and simpler offense, the Jets climbed its way back and finished the first quarter down by one.

-With 5:32 remaining in the second quarter, the Jets were looking at a 24-16 deficit after Iva Krstevska hit two free throws. The Jets defense picked up after that and they were able to force turnovers and stop the Ichabods on offense, creating the offense of its own, as the deficit at halftime was cut to five points.

-Coming out of the half looking to stay in the game, the Jets came out firing on all cylinders. The offense started off running smoother than the first half. Bria DeGrate added on to her big night, hitting a layup that put the Jets up by three late in the third. After that the Jets were able to score the final five points to close the quarter up by four.

-With 4:17 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Jets had a three-point advantage after Erica Olerich caught a pass from Nia Roberts for the layup. The quarter was coming to a close the game still close, the Jets were looking to keep its lead intact in the final minutes when Hannah Alexander had two clutch layups, increasing the Jet lead.

NOTES

 -The Jets were once again able to get contribution from players on the bench leading the game 27-12 in that category.

-The Jets' defense was able to force 17 turnovers and gaining the advantage in the points off turnovers category, scoring 21 points.

-The Jets finish up with a record of 2-2 against the MIAA in the nonconference portion of their schedule.

The Jets open up conference play, hosting St. Edward's Thursday at Fugate Gymnasium.
