Jets Drop Nonconference Game To Northwestern Oklahoma

WICHITA, Kan. — A big seconds half for the visitors proved to be the difference, as the Newman women's basketball team fell to Northwestern Oklahoma State 65-41 Saturday afternoon in nonconference action at Fugate Gymnasium.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (8-5) weathered a tough third quarter to make it an eight-point game at 39-31 with less than a minute to play in the period. The Rangers (6-4) answered with six straight points though, starting a 23-3 run that changed the flow of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Nia Roberts 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions staked the Jets out to an 8-4 lead in the game's firs three minutes. Hannah Alexander and Haley Albers each sank buckets later in the quarter to put Newman ahead, and Alexander added a pair of free throws to make it 16-13 after 10 minutes.

-Erica Olerich twice broke a tie in the second quarter, putting the Jets ahead 20-18 and 22-20. With under a minute to go before the break, Bria DeGrate nailed a 3-pointer to make it 25-23, but a pair of freebies from NWOSU's Jade Jones with one second left tied it back up.

-A layup from Albers drew Newman even at the 7:40 mark of the third, but the Rangers responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good. The Jets played even with the guests over the next three minutes, but NWOSU opened up its lead the rest of the way.

NOTES

-With the loss, the Jets saw their 11-game home winning streak come to an end.

-Alexander led the Jets with 11 points, adding three rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Olerich posted a game-high 11 rebounds, the third time in her last six games the senior pulled double double-digit boards.

WHAT'S NEXT
