WICHITA FALLS, Texas. — A big inning for the opponent ended up being the difference as the Newman softball team dropped a 2-0 decision to Southwest Baptist Friday evening on the first day of the MSU Round Robin at Midwestern State.
The Jets (2-5) put up six hits and didn't commit an error, but the bottom of the fourth from the Bearcats (1-0) proved to be too much.
SBU put up four of its nine hits in the frame, and scored the only two runs of the game, but Newman pitcher Kate Smith limited the damage by stranding a pair of runners. The senior allowed just one walk and struck out three in the game.
The Jets' best chance came early, as Ariole O'Neal singled with one out in the second and Kendra Mendoza added a second hit with two outs. O'Neal went 2-for-3 at the plate, as did Delaney Hiegert. Rachael Withers singled to lead off the seventh, but couldn't come around to score.
The Jets don't have long to rest, taking on Missouri S&T at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by host Midwestern State.
