Newman Extends Streak With Win Over OPSU

GOODWELL, Okla. – After waiting a full week to get back out on the court, the Newman women's basketball team got out to a hot start and did not look back, defeating Oklahoma Panhandle State 73-58 on the road Saturday afternoon.

KEY SEQUENCE

It would not take long for the Jets (17-8, 7-6 Heartland) to get things started against the Aggies (1-20, 0-13 Heartland), controlling the game from the start by having a 7-0 run, 9-0 run and a 16-0 run all in the first half of play, which would keep OPSU playing catch up throughout the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Natalia Hausmann would get the first basket of the game for either team with a layup, followed by a Cierra Tjaden layup to put the Jets up 4-0 with 8:28 in the first quarter.

-Newman would stretch its lead out to 11-2 thanks to a 7-0 run midway through the first quarter. Hannah Alexander led the way with three points during the run, while Mali Wright and Hausmann each had two.

-The Jets would bust the game open in the latter part of the first quarter, which bled into the second quarter byway of a 16-0 run to put the score at 27-4 with 9:51 to go in the second quarter. During the 16-0 run Alexander led the way in scoring with seven points, while Wright added four, Bria DeGrate with three and Iva Krstevka chipped in two.

-Another run would ensue after the 16-0 but this time it was a 9-0 run to put Newman up 36-7 with 5:30 remaining in the second quarter. Alexander would get the jumper to go first, followed by two DeGrate free throws, which led to a Krstevska 3-pointer and finally a Jazzmen Ortiz layup would finish the 9-0 run. The Jets would lead the Aggies 46-19 at the half.
