WICHITA FALLS, Texas — With an offense that couldn't quite get rolling, the Newman softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday afternoon to conclude its trip to the MSU Round Robin, hosted by Midwestern State.

The Jets (2-9) got a strong start against Colorado Mines (1-3), as Jensen Cromer retired the first nine batters she faced. The Orediggers chipped away with one run in the top of the fourth, right after Newman stranded two runners in the third looking to break the scoreless tie. Mines stretched the lead late to grab a 7-0 win.

Facing Southwest Baptist (2-2) for the second time of the weekend after improper field conditions at the tournament's second field forced a schedule shuffle Sunday, Newman fell 7-1 to the Bearcats. SBU plated three runs in the top of the first and added two more to extend the lead in the third.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Jets got a single from Erin Jankiewicz, who came around to score on a base knock by Rachael Withers.

Taylor Mannis led the offense on the day, reaching base three times by going 2-for-5 with a walk.

Newman will take two days off before playing doubleheaders on the road on back-to-back days this week, beginning Wednesday at Northeastern State.
