WICHITA, Kan. — Finishing off an impressive stretch to close the regular season, the Newman women's basketball team turned back Texas A&M International 72-46 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
KEY SEQUENCE
After seeing the opponent roll off eight straight points to cut into the lead, the Jets (19-9, 9-7 Heartland) responed with a 17-7 run to close the third quarter against the Dustdevils (2-24, 2-14 Heartland). Hannah Alexander scored 10 of those points, as Newman went from up eight to up 50-32.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Newman started strong, as Mali Wright netted two buckets and Natalia Hausmann a 3-pointer early to take a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes. The lead stretched to double digits for the first time with two Iva Krstevska free throws at the 8:02 mark of the second quarter.
-A seven-point burst off another Hausmann triple and buckets from Jazzmen Ortiz and Cierra Tjaden to make it 33-17 midway through the quarter before TAMIU went on its run.
-Five straight points to start the fourth quarter lifted the lead into the 20s, and the Jets build an advantage as high as 31 after a Hausmann 3-pointer before she, Wright, Tjaden were subbed out of the game for the final time.
