Jets Drop Doubleheader To William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. – The Newman softball team headed north to take on William Jewell in a nonconference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Spratt Sports Complex, but dropped both games.
 
The Jets (5-23) and Cardinals (7-9) could not get anything going in the first inning of Game 1, but William Jewell got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of second, scoring three runs to go up 3-0 early on.
 
Delaney Hiegert singled to center field in the top of the third with two outs but did not get any further as the top of the third ended. The Cardinals added a run in the bottom of the third to go up 4-0 after three complete innings. Mikayla Medbery would reach base off a William Jewell error and eventually made her way over to third base but was left stranded as the top of the fourth ended.
 
William Jewell would add a run in the bottom of the fourth and then put up three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to win Game 1 by a score of 8-0 over Newman.
 
The Cardinals put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning in Game 2 to get out to a strong start. Jensen Cromer doubled down the left field line to begin to the top of the second inning but was left stranded at second base to end the inning.
 
William Jewell scored two runs in the bottom of the third and four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 10-0 lead into the top of the fifth. Adrienne Esposito put the Jets on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth with a home run over the left field fence to make the score 10-2. The Cardinals would hang on to win Game 2 10-2 to complete the doubleheader.
 
Newman heads back home to take on Emporia State Friday in another nonconference doubleheader, starting at 4 p.m.
