PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Facing off against a regionally ranked foe and another from Division I, the Newman women's tennis team fell in a pair of matches to begin its spring break swing through Texas.
The Jets (3-10) started their week in the southern part of the state, suffering an 8-1 defeat at the hands of Texas A&M-Kingsville, which is ranked No. 7 in the South Central Region. Niamh Packer worked for a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles to secure Newman's lone point of the match, while Tamar Tskhakaia took a regionally ranked opponent to three sets at No. 2, falling in a tight 7-5, 5-7, 10-6 match.
Playing for the second straight day, Newman grabbed a pair of wins in a 5-2 loss to Division I Prairie View A&M Wednesday afternoon. Tskhakaia eased to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, and Emily Wise grabbed a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5.
The Jets have a day off Thursday before facing tough matches against Western New Mexico and Midwestern State on Friday and Saturday.
