SHAWNEE, Okla. — Finishing up its spring break trip against a tough pair of in-region opponents, the Newman women's tennis team split two matches this weekend.
The Jets (4-11) started its weekend with a 7-2 win over Western New Mexico Friday afternoon. Janneke de Rijk, Tamar Tskhakaia, Niamh Packer and Emily Wise took home straight-set wins in singles action, while Kateryna Stoianova worked for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win at No. 3. Tskhakaia and de Rijk, and Packer and Stoianova both picked up 8-4 wins in doubles to get the team off to a solid start.
After earning the big win, Newman had to 24 hours to get ready for its toughest match of the season, falling to No. 15 Midwestern State 8-1 on Saturday afternoon. Tskhakaia ran her singles record to 3-1 on the week by grabbing an impressive 7-5, 6-2 win over Eirini Kontaki, the No. 9-ranked singles player in the South Central Region.
The Jets are back at home for their next two matches, beginning Friday against No. 18 Oklahoma Baptist.
