DALLAS — In a rematch of its closest match of the regular season, the Newman men's tennis team picked up a huge three-set win from Alejandro Gonzalez and earned a 5-4 victory over St. Edward's in the semifinals of the 2017 Heartland Conference Men's Tennis Championship Friday evening.
The No. 43 Jets (10-10) were locked in a tight one with the No. 30 Hilltoppers (14-11) from the very beginning, but it was Gonzalez at the end, picking up a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles that clinched it and sent Newman to the final for the second time in three seasons.
Gonzalez and Eduardo Santos earned a point and Felipe Batistella and Lucas Norbiato went to a tiebreak in a 9-8 (8-6) match to give the Jets the crucial advantage after doubles.
Batistella and Santos each worked a breezy straight-set victory over a regionally ranked opponent in singles to boost Newman to a point away from the clinch, but St. Edward's got right back in it with three straight wins.
That left it open for Gonzalez, who went back-and-forth with Hilltopper Charlie Shin before sealing the victory.
Newman will face the winner of Friday's second final between top-seeded St. Mary's and Arkansas-Fort Smith in Saturday's noon final back at the SMU Tennis Complex.
