SAN ANTONIO — After taking both games of a doubleheader against No. 5 St. Mary's to lock up the series win 24 hours earlier, the Newman softball team fell 3-1 to the Rattlers to wrap up its weekend.
The Jets (11-30, 5-7 Heartland) took an early lead in the first, but the Rattlers (32-9, 9-3 Heartland) answered with two in the bottom half and held on in another low-scoring game.
Rachael Withers led off the game with a single, and after another base hit by Taylor Mannis, Jensen Cromer bunted for a hit to score Withers and give the guests a 1-0 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the inning though, St. Mary's picked up a double and a single to score a pair and take over.
Pitching took over from there, with the teams combining for just four hits the rest of the way. Kate Smith allowed just a single and a walk over the next three innings as the Jets tried to tie it up, but they left the bases loaded in the fourth and stranded a runner at third in the fifth.
St. Mary's added to its lead with a one-out triple in the fifth to make it 3-1, but Smith got out of the inning with ease, and Jensen Cromer worked a perfect sixth to keep Newman within striking distance.
Withers moved to the leadoff spot and went 2-for-3 for the third straight game. Smith allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five. The four total runs scored by St. Mary's on the weekend is the Rattler's lowest output in a Heartland Conference series since scoring four against St. Edward's in 2010.
Newman makes another roadtrip next weekend, heading to Rogers State for a three-game series Thursday and Friday.
