LAS VEGAS — Putting together solid performances across a stretch of four days in Las Vegas, the Newman women's bowling team put together a pair of top-three finishes in its final competitions of 2017.

The Jets began their week before Christmas with a third-place finish at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational at South Point Bowling Plaza. They finished second overall in qualifying and rolled by Grand Canyon 3-1 in the first round of match play before falling 3-2 in the semifinals to eventual champion St. Francis.

With 22 teams and nearly 150 bowlers in attendance, Leanne Vastbinder paced the team, averaging 197.33 over nine qualifying games to finish in seventh in the individual standings. Kelly Machacek wasn't far behind, finishing 11th with a 191.33 average.

Newman wrapped up its stay in Las Vegas with the Collegiate Shoot-Out at Orleans Bowling Center, finishing second in the 23-team field with a total pinfall of 11,430 after six team games and 16 baker games.

Vastbinder upped her play even more at the Orleans, averaging 219.5 across her six games to finish third and earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Ashton Anderson finished 12th with a 203.6 average.

The Jets are back in action January 13-14, when they head back to the Dallas area for another pair of Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference tournaments.
