WICHITA, KAN – The Newman University women's basketball team fell 72-60 to No. 12 Fort Hays State Tuesday night at Fugate Gymnasium.
Sophomore guard Braxtyn Stewart struck first blood knocking down a 3-pointer to begin the contest. The Tigers quickly answered with an 8-0 run gaining an 8-3 lead midway through the first quarter. The Jets would not go away as they answered closing the quarter on a 5-0 run, taking an 18-17 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, the Tigers came out red hot on the offensive side regaining the lead 25-18, with an 8-0 run. The Jets' offense cooled down missing their first four shots to begin the second frame. Sophomore forward, Hayley Albers continued to keep the Jets in the game recording 14 points in the first half as the Jets trailed at the break 38-30.
The Jets' continued to claw back on the Tigers in the third quarter as junior guard, Kaitlyn Potter caught fire scoring eight of her 11 points in the period trimming the FHSU lead down back down to 53-44. The Tigers closed the quarter on a 4-1 run taking a twelve point advantage into the final quarter.
In the fourth, the two teams continued to match each one on the offensive side of things. The Jets cut the Tigers lead back down to 65-57 with 3:40 to play, but the deficit was too much to make up.
Cheney, KS forward Hailey Albers led the Jets in scoring with 14 points including 3-3 from behind the 3-point line.
The Jets will hit the road for a two week period beginning this weekend in the Parrish Hotels Thanksgiving Classic held on the campus of Washburn University. Newman will begin the classic on Friday, (Nov.23) at 2 p.m. against Maryville.
