AUSTIN, Tex. — The Newman women's basketball team got a conference win on the road Saturday as the Jets defeated St. Edward's 65-60. The Jets continue to move up in conference and with conference play coming down to the wire this win helps the Jets moving forward.
Key Sequence
With the game tied at halftime, both teams were looking to edge on the other going into the second half. With 3:29 left in the game the Jets (16-8, 7-3 Heartland) were looking at a tied game when Bria DeGrate hit a three to tie the game again at 58. The Jets were looking good getting stops from their defense while the offense was moving smoothly. Dede Johnson would hit a free throw in the final 15 seconds to give the Jets the five-point lead and later the victory over the Hilltoppers (10-12, 4-6 Heartland).
How It Happened
-In the beginning of the first quarter the Jets were looking good, starting off the game hot going up 6-2 in the first two and half minutes. The Hilltoppers went on a run of their own but the Jets weren't going away easy and at the end of the quarter, the Jets were only down a point.
-At the 5:20 mark the Jets got a spark offensively when Nia Roberts hit a three to tie the game at 23. Newman's defense was able to get stops defensively and offensively the Jets were able to get a contribution from Hannah Alexander, Dede Johnson, and Roberts the teams would go into halftime tied at 35.
-In the third, the Jets were down by six with 2:30 left in the quarter the Hilltoppers were able to get the lead until the one minute mark when the Jets got a clutch layup from Roberts and later Alexander to put the Jets down by three at the end of the quarter.
-At the 3:29 mark in the fourth, the teams were tied at 55 the Jets were looking to get the edge on the Hilltoppers. The game was coming down to the wire after a Degrate three the Jets would be staring at a tied game once again. In the final 15 seconds, the Jets would hit some clutch free throws giving them the advantage and later the victory.
Notes
-The Jets got a big contribution from Roberts the guard finished with 18 points and five rebounds while propelling the Jets to victory.
-Newman was able to win the points in the paint battle with the Hilltoppers 22-18, the bench was able to contribute as well scoring 17 while the Hilltoppers finished with seven.

The Jets return home for a homecoming matchup with St. Mary's Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
