Jets Readying For Conference Tournament This Weekend

WICHITA, Kan. — After finishing up the regular season on the road the Newman Women's basketball team will look ahead to the Heartland Conference women's basketball tournament beginning Friday March 2 in Tulsa.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

Quarterfinals

Thursday March 1

Game 1: #2 Arkansas-Fort Smith vs St. Edward's, 2:30 p.m.

Game 2: #1 Lubbock Christian vs #8 Texas A&M International, 7:30 p.m.

Friday, March 2

Game 3: #4 Newman vs #5 Oklahoma Christian, 2:30 p.m.

Game 4: #3 St. Mary's vs #6 Rogers State, 7:30 p.m.

Semifinals

Saturday, March 3

Game 5: Winner Game 2 vs Winner Game 3, 2:30 p.m.

Game 6: Winner Game 1 vs Winner Game 4, 7:30 p.m.

Championship

Sunday March 4

Game 7: Semifinal Winners, 3 p.m.

SCOUTING NEWMAN

The Jets (17-11, 8-6 Heartland) finished their season on the road in Claremore, Oklahoma to take on Rogers State, looking for good seeding in the tournament the jets were looking to come away with a well-deserved victory Wednesday. The teams would go back and forth no one getting an advantage over the other, the game coming down to the wire after some clutch free throws from the Hillcats, they would go on to win 74-72.

SCOUTING THE FIELD

Newman will begin tournament play with Oklahoma Christian (9-17, 5-9 Heartland) who they went 2-0 against this year. The Eagles finish up the regular season going 1-1 in their last weekend, on Thursday Oklahoma Christian traveled to Fort Smith, Arkansas to take on the Lions. The Eagles would struggle throughout the game and would come away with the loss 95-83. Saturday the Eagles traveled to Claremore, Oklahoma to take on Rogers State Oklahoma Christian would come away with a really good 74-68 victory going into the postseason.

On The Jets' side of the bracket the next highest seeded team is the Heartland regular season champions Lubbock Christian (25-1, 14-0 Heartland), who the Jets had some trouble with this season. The Chaps are currently ranked No. 1 in the South Central region going into this weekend's action.

On the other side of the bracket the matchups include the No. 2 seed Arkansas-Fort Smith (18-9, 10-4 Heartland) who are currently ranked No. 6 in the South Central Region. The No. 3 seeded St. Mary's (15-12, 9-5 Heartland) who is coming into the tournament beating Fort Smith Saturday February, 17 84-75. Their opponents are the No. 7 seed St. Edward's (11-16, 4-10 Heartland) and No. 6 seed Rogers State (10-16, 5-9 Heartland).

NOTES

-Newman finished both fourth in the Heartland in offensive ppg (70.8) and Defensive ppg (61.1). The Jets also finished second in defensive rebounding with an average 28.4 ppg.

-Hannah Alexander finished the season as the team leading scorer averaging 17.9, 7.6 points higher than the next scorer Bria DeGrate who finished the season with 10.3 ppg.
