Jets Able To Split With Eagles Thanks To Late Inning Heroics In Game Two

WICHITA, Kan. — The Jet split a doubleheader midweek matchup with heartland member Oklahoma Christian. The Eagles were able to win a close game one 3-2 with some solid pitching and the Jets were able to get the game two victory with the help of some late-inning hitting by Neman.

GAME 1

Key Sequence

The Jets (5-23, 2-11 Heartland) took an early lead in the opener, but starter Madison Nordyke took control in the circle for the Eagles (14-13, 5-5 Heartland). Starting in the bottom of the third, Newman saw just one runner reach base, getting one hitter aboard on an error. Nordyke struck out two and didn't walk anyone over that five-inning stretch as the Eagles held on for the 3-2 win.

How It Happened

-A leadoff walk got OC on the board early, as two groundouts moved the runner to third and a single brought her home to make it 1-0. Newman answered though, as Taylor Mannis led off with a triple to the fence in right. Delaney Hiegert followed with a single to score her, and came across to score on an error.

-That 2-1 lead lasted until the top of the second, when another leadoff walk aided the Eagles. That was followed by a single and a sacrifice bunt, which allowed the guests to tie it up. As Nordyke was entering her hot streak, OC took the lead in the top of the fourth, as a single and an error put a runner on second, and she scored on Daelyn Denny's double to left.

GAME 2

Key Sequence

The Jets (5-23, 2-11 Heartland) were looking at a tied game going into the bottom of the seventh inning against the Eagles (14-13, 5-5 Heartland), Hayden Francis was able to get the Jets started reaching on an error by Bridget White, later in the inning the Jets would be able to score with Taylor Mannis reaching on an error by Madison Nordyke scoring Hayden Francis giving the Jets the game 2 victory.

How It Happened

-With good pitching and defense throughout the game, the Eagles were able to get on the board first with a Sheridan Fuller single up the middle, Nordyke would move the runner over with a sacrifice bunt later in the inning bringing up Bailey Strecker who would single to left field and score Fuller. Strecker would later score on a throwing error by Hayden Francis

-In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Jets began their comeback beginning with a Delaney Heigert singled to first base bringing up pinch hitter Tyesha Morgan who would work a walk, later bringing up Emma Eck who singled to left field scoring Heigert and moving pinch runner Wallace to third who would later score on a wild pitch tying the game at two. Later in the seventh, the Jets were able to get the game 2 victory with Hayden Francis and Taylor Mannis both reaching on errors by the Eagles with Francis later scoring.

NOTES

-Freshman pitcher Bailey Bugner was able to get the game 2 victory going all seven innings striking out two, with a walk, and an earned run.

-Heigert had a good game 2 going 2-for-3, going 3-for-6 on the day overall.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Jets travel to Lubbock Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17 for a three-game series with Lubbock Christian.
