LUBBOCK, Texas — Facing an offense that found some power, the Newman softball team fell to Lubbock Christian 9-1 Saturday afternoon to close out a Heartland Conference series.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (5-26, 2-14 Heartland) were in a good position with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the third, and were able to push across a run to tie it up at 1-1 against the Lady Chaps (17-9, 8-6 Heartland), but the hosts left the bases loaded and then went to work in the bottom half of the inning. A two-run home run for LCU pushed the lead out to 3-1, and helped give the Chaps some cushion.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-A pair of singles around a walk in the bottom of the first got Lubbock Christian on the board first. The Jets were poised to answer in the second, but a run was cut down at the plate for the third out of the inning.
-In the top of the third, Taylor Mannis led off with a single, stole second, and moved up to third on Delaney Hiegert's single to right. Abby Davis walked to load the bases, and Emma Eck drew another free pass to draw even with the Chaps, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended the threat.
-LCU tacked on to the lead with a solo homer and an RBI double in the fourth, and scored four in the bottom of the fifth to end it, including a two-run, two-out single in the final at-bat.
NOTES
-Hayden Francis went 2-for-2 at the plate, notching a pair of singles. Eck also reached base twice, adding a single to her RBI walk.
-Hiegert's single in the third extended her hitting streak to five games.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Jets make a quick road trip to Missouri on Wednesday afternoon, where they'll face Southwest Baptist in a doubleheader.
