Jets Split Two Games With Lubbock At Home

WICHITA, Kan. —The Newman softball team split the day against a conference foe in Lubbock Christian winning game one 6-4 and losing game two 8-6. The Jets bounced back after a rough start on the road and a couple games at home.

Game 1

Key Sequence

The Jets (3-15, 1-5 Heartland)) had a 4-6 lead going into the sixth inning after Delaney Hiegert singled up the middle scoring two runs in the fifth giving Newman a three-run lead. The Lady Chaps (10-5, 4-2 Heartland) got a run in the sixth cutting the Jet lead to two runs but with help from pitching from Nique Payne and Chantel Purcella, Newman was able to hold on for the victory.

How It Happened

-In the second inning, the Lady Chaps were able to get on the board first when Adelae Vayas grounded to shortstop scoring Sara Ralston giving Lubbock the one-run lead.

-Newman was able to nod up the game in the next inning when Erin Jankiewicz singled to right center scoring Abbey Davis tying the game at one. Later in the inning infielder, Bailey Bugner put the Jets up by three after she homered to left center scoring Tyesha Morgan and Jankiewicz Newman would now have a four-run lead.

-In the third, the Lady Chaps were able to cut the Jets lead to one after Sydney Beuthien and Morgan Bufour both singled in the inning scoring two runs and now the Newman lead was 4-3.

-The Jets would finally try to put the game away in the fourth after Delaney Heigert singled up the middle scoring Adrienne Esposito and Emma Eck this would give the Jets a 6-3 lead.

-The Lady Chaps would get a run in the fifth after Beuthien tripled to right center scoring Lindzi Clemmer, it was a 6-4 game at this point in the game but with solid pitching from Payne and Purcella, the Jets were able to hold on for the victory.

Notes

-Erin Jankiewicz had a good day at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double.

-Chantel Purcella picked up the save striking out three and walking one helping the Jets to a 6-4 victory.

Game 2

Key Sequence

In the bottom of fifth the Jets (3-15, 1-5 Heartland) were able to cut the Lady Chaps (10-5, 4-2 Heartland) lead to two after a Single from Delaney Hiegert singled up the middle scoring Adrienne Esposito and Bailey Bugner, the Jets would add on another run when Abbey Davis singled to second scoring Hiegert it was now a 7-6 game going into the later innings. The Chaps added another run in the fifth with an Adelae Vayas triple scoring Hayley Hardison giving the team an 8-6 lead and later the victory.

How It Happened

-The Jets got started early scoring in the first when Paige Wallace singled up the middle scoring Heigert and giving the Jets a one-run lead. After a single from Davis, Erin Jankiewicz reached on an error by the third baseman Annika Schwarzenberg scoring Wallace the Jets were now up 2-0.

-In the third, Bailey Bugner singled to the pitcher and after two sacrifice bunts from Esposito and Hiegert the team would get a single from Taylor Mannis scoring Bugner and giving the Jets a three-run lead.

-The Lady Chaps began to cut into the Jet lead in the third when Megan Darling hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Averi miller. The Chaps would add on three more runs later in the inning when Morgan Dufour homered to right field the Chaps were now up 4-3.

-In the fourth, the Lady Chaps got a double from Logan Grado to left field scoring Vayas and Casey Ingram the Chaps lead was now three runs. Later in the inning Darling would single to left field scoring Grado and the Jets were looking at a four-run deficit.

-Newman was able to get back into the game with a Hiegert singled up the middle and advancing on the throw, scoring Esposito and Bugner Newman cut the lead to two after the hit. Later the Jets got a single from Abbey Davis which scored Hiegert and this would make it a one-run game.

-The Lady Chaps came up in the eighth looking to add another run after Hardison walked early in the inning, Vayas later came up and tripled to right center this would score Hardison and give the Chaps an 8-6 lead and later the victory.

Notes

-Infielder Bailey Bugner had a good day at the plate for the Jets going 3-for-4 at the plate. Adrienne Esposito and Abbey Davis both added a 2-for-3 day and a 2-for-4 day for the Jets in Game 2.

What's Next

The Jets return home Sunday, March 4 for a conference matchup with St. Edward's starting at noon.
