Jets Split Nonconference Doubleheader with Cardinals
WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman Softball team split a midweek doubleheader with William Jewell College Wednesday, the Jets won game 1 5-4 and Game 2 the teams went into extra innings with the Cardinals winning that game 4-1.
Game 1
Key Sequence
The Jets (4-18) had bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh when Tyesha Morgan came up and battled for four pitches being able to get a ball deep into center field but an error by the Cardinal's (11-3) center fielder scoring Paige Wallace and winning the game for the Jets.
How It Happened
-The Cardinals would strike first in the top of the third when Madi Giles was able to reach first on an error, later in the inning, Brooke Bernard singled up the middle advancing Giles to third. Emily Hoover later came up and homered to left field giving the Cardinals a 3-0 lead early.
-In the bottom of the fifth, the Jets were able to get back into the game first with Adrienne Esposito reaching on an error, Delaney Heigert singled to third base advancing Esposito. Taylor Mannis singled to center field scoring Esposito and putting Newman on the board. Abby Davis later came up and singled, advancing on an error by the right fielder scoring Mannis and Heigert the lead was now down to one. Morgan singled up the middle and advancing on a throw home scoring Davis and putting the Jets up 4-3.
-The Jets came up in the bottom of the seventh looking to win the game the Jets were able to get a single from Paige Wallace, Abby Davis came up and saw five pitches working a walk, Emma Eck was able to reach on an error by the third baseman, Newman now had the bases loaded bringing up Morgan in an RBI situation and she produced, getting a deep fly ball to center field and with an error by the center fielder that would allow Wallace to score giving the Jets the one run victory.
Game 2
Key Sequence
The Jets (4-18) were looking at a tied game with the Cardinals (11-3) in the top of the eighth when Phoebe Dabbour walked setting up the Cardinals with runners on first and second. Courtney Beatty singled up the middle scoring Anna Biondo and giving the Cardinals the lead and later the victory in extra innings.
How It Happened
-Both teams were solid defensively keeping the game tied until the bottom of the sixth when the Jets were able to get a bases-loaded walk from pinch-hitter Bayley Horsch scoring Abby Davis and giving the Jets a 1-0 lead.
-The Cardinals were able to get on the board in the top of the seventh when Beatty doubled down the left field line and later advancing to third on a groundout by Madelynne Greenstreet. Biondo singled to right field scoring Beatty and tying the game at one.
-Going into the eighth both teams tied at one looking to finish off the other team, Dabbour lead off the inning with a four-pitch walk bringing up Beatty again, she was able to single up the middle scoring Biondo and giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Greenstreet later came up and doubled to left center scoring Beatty and Taylor Friesen the Cardinals now had a 4-1 lead and would later finish the game for the victory.
Notes
-Infielder Abby Davis had a good day at the plate in going 4-for-7 on the day with two RBIs.
-Pitcher Chantel Purcella pitched a good game striking out four and walking one on the day before Nique Payne was able to come in and close the door for the Jets.
