Box Score WICHITA, Kan. — Battling deep into a number of matches, the Newman women's tennis team fell 6-3 to Arkansas-Fort Smith in its Heartland Conference opener Thursday afternoon at Riverside Tennis Center.
The Jets (8-3, 0-1 Heartland) went to three first-set tiebreakers and won two against the Lions (6-3, 2-0 Heartland). Kateryna Stoianova earned a 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory at No. 4 singles for Newman, with Emily Young also picking up a singles point with a straight-set win at No. 5.
Stoianova and Vlada Litvinova moved to 7-1 on the season as a doubles pair with an 8-4 win at No. 2.
The Jets continue a busy weekend at home on Friday, when they host William Jewell at 1 p.m. back at Riverside.
