ARLINGTON, Texas — In a match that was much closer than the final team score, the Newman men's tennis team fell 5-0 to No. 28 St. Mary's in the semifinals of the 2018 Heartland Conference Men's Tennis Championship Friday morning at the Arlington Tennis Center.
The Jets (9-13) fell in a pair of 8-6 matches in doubles, helping lift the second-seeded Rattlers (14-6) to a 3-0 lead heading into singles. That meant Newman had to take five of the six singles courts to complete a comeback win, and although nearly every match was competitive, St. Mary's clinched the victory.
On the four courts that were still active when the match was clinched: Lauri Soome had won the first set by tiebreak, Lucas Norbiato had dropped the first set in a tiebreak and was tied in the second, and Diego Rojo and Szbin Pusztay had split the first two sets and were head to the third.
