AUSTIN, Texas — For the second time in as many days, the Newman softball team suffered a heartbreaking walk-off defeat to St. Edward's, falling 2-1 Friday afternoon in the finale of their Heartland Conference series.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (13-39, 7-21 Heartland) limited the Hilltoppers (6-40, 6-21 Heartland) to six singles in the first six innings, but two big knocks made the difference in the bottom of the seventh, as two doubles in the first three batters of the inning put a runner into scoring position then sent her home for the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The pitchers on both sides — Newman's Bailey Bugner and St. Edward's Keely Frazier — kept the offense to a minimum throughout. The Jets got two on in the top of the first with singles from Abby Davis and Emma Eck, but weren't able to capitalize.
-SEU returned the favor in the bottom of the second, but Bugner scooped up a comebacker for the final out to keep it scoreless. Newman wasn't quite as lucky in the next inning, as a leadoff walk was eventually followed by a pair of two-out singles, the latter of which made it a 1-0 lead for the hosts.
-Paige Wallace tied it up in the fifth, as she started the inning with a single, moved up to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout. An infield single by Erin Jankiewicz plated her and made it 1-1. The Jets walked the bases loaded with one out in the sixth, but couldn't break through to take the lead.
NOTES
-Davis and Eck each reached base twice. Eck's single extended the freshman's hitting streak to six games.
