ARLINGTON, Texas — Drawing top seed and No. 6 St. Mary's in the semifinals of the 2018 Heartland Conference Women's Tennis Championship was a tall task, but Newman held its own in a 5-0 defeat Friday afternoon at the Arlington Tennis Center.

The Jets (13-9) fell behind 3-0 after doubles, but Vlada Litvinova at No. 2 singles and Kateryna Stoianova at No. 4 both led their matches when the winning point was clinched. Stoianova had won the first set, and Litvinova was up 5-3 in the first.

Newman would need to hop a number of teams to reach the NCAA postseason, but still has an outside chance. Those selections will be announced Tuesday evening.
