OKLAHOMA CITY — Getting some early offense, the Newman softball team fell quiet at the plate the rest of the way as Oklahoma Christian earned a doubleheader sweep Thursday in Heartland Conference action.
GAME 1
Key Sequence
The Jets (8-32, 3-18 Heartland) scored the first two runs of the weekend series, but the Eagles (23-18, 13-7 Heartland) struck back to tie it in the bottom of the second, then took the lead for good with four hits in the bottom of the third in an 8-4 victory.
How It Happened
-An Erin Jankiewicz triple with two outs in the top of the first got the Jets going, and Emma Eck knocked her home with a double to make it 1-0. A Bailey Bugner double in the second plated Paige Wallace to stake Newman to a 2-0 advantage before the Eagles took the lead with their four runs in two frames.
-Two more OC runs came across in the fifth, but the Jets had one last flurry in them. Jankiewicz singled to center to start the top of the sixth and Eck followed with a walk, opening things up for a two-out error that allowed two runs to score and make it 6-4.
-A pair of two-out singles by the Eagles in the bottom half of the inning each scored runs to give the hosts a bit of a cushion.
GAME 2
Key Sequence
Only down by two as the game moved along, the Jet offense couldn't find much success against OC pitcher Madison Hagood, and the Eagles notched six runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out an 8-0 run-rule victory.
How It Happened
-A quick first inning opened up into opportunities for both teams in the second. Newman had runners on second and third with one out after Eck singled and Abby Davis walked, but Hagood got out of the jam. The Jets got a double play in the bottom half to clear the bases, but a walk and a single with two outs put the hosts in front 1-0.
-Two singles in the third gave Newman two runners with one out again, but OC kept it scoreless. The Eagles tacked onto their lead with a single and a two-out triple to make it 2-0.
-A triple to open the bottom of the fifth got the big inning going for the Eagles, and five more hits in the frame all scored at least one run.
NOTES
-Jankiewicz and Bugner each notched a pair of hits in the opener, with Jankiewicz scoring twice.
