Jets Cruise in Final Non-Conference Game

WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman University women's basketball team blew past Randall University 96-37 in their final non-conference game of the season Monday evening (Jan. 7). The Jets improved to 9-5 overall on the season, while the contest counted as an exhibition team for the Saints.

After leading 7-6 just three minutes into the contest, the Jets' offense caught fire quickly from outside. Junior guard, Kaitlyn Potter started the outside clinic nailing her first of her six, first half triples. On the very next possession senior guard, Bria DeGrate became the first ever Jet to reach the 1,000 career point club in the programs Division II history, converting an old fashion three point play. Haley Albers continued the 15-0 run, hitting two of her three opening quarter three pointers, extending the Jets lead to 22-6. The Jets led after the first quarter 28-11, hitting a season high nine first quarter three pointers.

Much like the first quarter, the Jets outside shooting continued to stay scorching hot from behind the three point line. Sophomore, Braxtyn Stewart started another stretch of three point chains, hitting back-to-back triples starting a 12-0 run. The Jets went into the locker rooms leading 58-17, while setting a new Division II program record for three pointers made in a game with 14 triples in the half.

The Jets' offense slowed down a bit in the third quarter however continued to build on their lead in the third quarter stretching it out 73-21 with 1:26 to play after another Albers triple. The Jets headed into the final quarter leading 73-23.

In the fourth quarter the Newman offense continued to dominate, attacking inside scoring 10 of their 23 fourth quarter points in the paint. The Jets rode out to their largest lead, 96-37 with just under two minutes to play.

Potter led the way for the Jets scoring a game high 26 points, while hitting a season high eight three pointers. Albers set a season high 18 points, knocking down five triples. Stewart added in 13 points, with DeGrate scoring 10.

The Jets concluded the contest shooting 19 for 43 from behind the three point line.

The Jets will open up conference play on the road at Rogers State, Thursday evening (Jan. 10). Tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Claremore, Okla.
