EDMOND, Okla. – The Jets traveled for their first road game of the season against a former Heartland Conference opponent in the Oklahoma Christian Eagles in a non-conference matchup on Monday night. Newman was looking to bounce back from a two-game losing streak while the Eagles were looking for their first win of the season.
In the first quarter, the Jets jumped on the Eagles with an early 9-0 lead thanks to three three pointers, two by
Kaitlyn Potter and one by
Braxtyn Stewart. The Jets would command the first quarter and lead by as many as 8 points in the quarter. After a basket by Oklahoma Christian made the score 14-8,
Brooke Haney would score an and-one to make the Jets lead 17-8. A three-point basket by Oklahoma Christian would cut the lead to 17-11 to end the first quarter.
The Jets would look to avoid their second quarter woes they have had in their last couple matches. Newman would come out of the break firing as they made two quick three-point baskets one from
Haley Albers and the other from Stewart to give the Jets their largest lead of the game, 12 points. The Jets would go on a scoring drought of almost eight minutes and the Eagles took advantage going on a 18-0 run in the eight-minute span to give the Eagles a 29-23 lead with just under two minutes left in the half. The Jets would comeback and go on a 8-0 run themselves to take a 31-29 lead going into the half.
After the break, a layup by
Abbey George would extend the Jets lead to 4. Oklahoma Christian would make two free throws to cut the Jets lead down to 2. George would make another layup and a jumper to get the Jets lead back up to 6. Two free throws by Potter would extend the Jets lead to 8 points, 39-31 with 3:47 remaining in the quarter. After a basket by Oklahoma Christian cut the lead to 6 points, Potter would make a jumper and get fouled. She would complete the three point play by making her free throw. Oklahoma Christian wouldn't go away but Newman kept answering back after an Oklahoma Christian score. The Jets took a 45-37 lead to end the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Oklahoma Christian went on a 5-0 run to start the quarter and cut the Jets lead to 45-42 with 6:44 left in the quarter. With a couple of free throws from
Michaela Mack, a three from Potter and a three from
Rylee Meloy, the Jets would get their lead back up to 9 points with 4:42 left in the game. With great defense throughout the game the final nail was put into the coffin when Potter made two free throws with 1:04 left in the game to make the Jets lead up to 11 points. Albers would make one more free throw to give the Jets a 56-44 win.
The leading scorer in tonight's contest was
Kaitlyn Potter with 22 pts, 5 ast, 4 stl and 3 reb.
Abbey George contributed 8 pts and 5 reb and
Haley Albers had 7 pts and 7 reb in the Jets win.

The Jets will be back in action Saturday, November 23 as they travel to Bolivar, Mo. to take on Southwest Baptist University starting at 1:30 P.M.
