Despite a big second half, Jets fall short of Maryville 70-66

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – In the final day of the Missouri-St. Louis Thanksgiving Classic, Newman took on the Saints of Maryville. The Jets came into this afternoon's matchup looking to stay above .500 on the season after defeating Missouri-St. Louis in the first game of the classic, 62-58.  The Saints came in looking for their third straight win.

Amoni White would get the scoring started with a 3 pointer. The Saints would score the next 11 points capped off by a Mary Barton 3 pointer to give the Saints a 11-3 lead with 6:22 left in the first quarter. White would cut the deficit to 11-5 with 6:02 left with a jumper. The Saints would take advantage of the Newman offensive struggles going on a 10-0 run to expand the lead to 21-5 with 2:47 left in the first quarter. A jumper by Faith Mason-Vestal stopped the Saints run to make the score 21-7. Madison Birnbaum made a 3 pointer with 1:10 left to cut the Saints lead 26-10.  With 46 seconds left in the first quarter, Maryville would make a 3 to extend the Saints lead back to 19, 29-10 to end the quarter.

In the second quarter, Madison Birnbaum would get the scoring started with a layup to make the score 29-12.  After a jumper by McKenzie Brown made the score 31-14, the Saints went on another run scoring the next 8 points to extend their lead to 22, 39-14 with 5:58 left in the second quarter. Rylee Meloy would stop the run with a 3 point basket to make the score 39-17. After a Saints basket, the Jets would go on a 5-0 run over the next 1:30 with a 3 point basket by Haley Albers and a layup by Amoni White to cut the deficit 41-22.  The Saints would score the next four points to extend the lead back to 23 with 2:20 left in the second quarter, 45-22.  The Jets would finish the quarter on a 4-0 run to trail Maryville 45-26 at the half.

In the third quarter, the momentum went in the way of the Jets who outscored Maryville 26-5 in the quarter. The Jets would start the quarter with a 23-2 run to take their first lead since the beginning of the first quarter, 49-47 with 1:47 left in the quarter. During that run, McKenzie Brown had 7 points and both Amoni White and Haley Albers added 5 points each. A Braxtyn Stewart layup capped off the run that put the Jets ahead. Maryville would respond with an old fashioned three point play as they made a jumper and a free throw after a foul on the shooter. Braxtyn Stewart would end the quarter with a 3 pointer as time expired to give the Jets a 52-50 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Saints would start the quarter with a basket to tie the game 52-52.  The Saints would get the lead after a layup by Jansen to lead Newman 54-52 with 8:51 left.  Newman would respond to tie the game again with a White layup to tie the game once again. After a free throw basket by Faith Mason-Vestal gave Newman a 1 point lead, the Saints would go on a 7-0 run to take the lead back 61-55 with 6:11 left.  After a Jets basket cut the lead back to 63-59, Maryville would make three free throws to make the score 66-59 with 4:19 left. With 2:11 left, Brown would make a layup to make the score 66-63 in favor of the Saints.  Newman would add another point with a Brown free throw to make the score 66-64 with 1:30 left.  With 47 seconds left in the game Brown would make a layup to tie the game at 66-66. After the Saints made 2 crucial free throws to give them the 2 point lead with 25 seconds left, Newman had a chance to tie the game but the shot by Brown was off target. Maryville added two more free throws to give them the 70-66 win over the Jets.

Newman was led in scoring by Amoni White with 16 points, McKenzie Brown with 14 points, and Madison Birnbaum with 11 points.

Newman will be back in action Thursday December 5th as they travel to Tahlequah, Okla. to take on Northeastern State in the first MIAA conference matchup of the season starting at 5:30 P.M.
