In the third quarter, a layup by
Bailey Hawkins sparked a 30-3 run. The big scoring run would build the Jets lead to 47 by the end of the quarter. Later in the game, a
Haley Albers 3 point basket and
Abby Girard layup would make the lead 52 late in the fourth quarter.Â
Makayla Hayes layup with 1:45 left in the game would be the icing on the cake for the Jets as they obtained their biggest lead of the game, 57. This would be the highest scoring game that Newman has had so far this season by four points. The Jets shot 28-of-62 for 45 percent from the floor and 18-of-23 for 73 percent from the free throw line. Newman held Randall to 20 percent from the field and 1-of-16 from three. Newman out-rebounded the Saints by 15, 38-23, with 6 coming on the offensive end. Newman also forced the Saints to turn the ball over 29 times compared to their 9 turnovers.Â
Kaitlyn Potter and
Amoni White led the way for the Jets with 12 points.Â
Haley Albers added 10 points in the win. The Newman Jets returned home for a non-conference matchup against Randall University. Newman lead from the opening tip to the final buzzer in this one. Newman would have their largest victory of the season, 57 points. Newman would defeat Randall University 80-23.
THE COACHES
Darin Spence is in his eighth season as the Jets head coach, leading the Jets to a 5-5 record so far in the 2019-20 season. Spence has compiled a 565-306 record as a head women's basketball coach over a 28-year span across NCAA Division I and Division II, NAIA, and NJCAA schools. His seven years with the Jets have seen him amass a record of 109-95 overall and a 59-53 mark in Heartland Conference play. Under Spence's tenure, the Jets reached the Heartland Conference tournament in six of his seven seasons. Before coming to Newman, Spence spent one season at Barton Community College and eight seasons at Division I New Mexico State.
Whitney Corley is in her fifth season as the Southwestern College head coach. She took the reins of the program prior to the 2015-16 season. After serving the first half of the season in an interim role, she was named Head Coach in January 2016. She was an assistant coach of Southwestern from 2014-15 after six years at Garden City Community College.

Southwestern College is 7-6 on the season, 4-5 in the KCAC. The Moundbuilders have three players averaging double figures led by Marissa Evans at 12.5 points per game. Ashley Carrillo and Marissa Evans lead the team in rebounding at 5.2 per game.

This will be the fourth meeting between these schools with Newman leading the series against the Moundbuilders 3-0 with the latest matchup being Dec. 31
th, 2018 in Wichita, Kan. where the Jets defeated the Moundbuilders 84-50 in a lopsided affair.
LAST TIME VS SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE
The last time the Jets faced off with the Moundbuilders was on December 31
st, 2018, in Wichita, Kansas where Newman would defeat the Southwestern 84-50. Newman would set the tone early as they would out score Southwestern College 23-7 in the quarter to have a 16-point lead. In the second quarter the Moundbuilders would make some noise outscoring the Jets 14-12 to cut the deficit to 14 at the half. In the third quarter the Jets would come out firing and outscore the Moundbuilders 22-13 in the quarter and extended their lead to 23 points going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, a three-point basket by Southwestern cut the lead to 20 for the Jets. Newman would go on an 11-4 run to make the lead 25 with 9 minutes left in the game. Newman would get their largest lead of the game thanks to a 3-point basket by
Makayla Hayes to make the score 84-50, a 34-point lead with 32 seconds left. Newman would take the win 84-50 in this contest.Â
Bria DeGrate would lead Newman in scoring with 21 points and
Haley Albers added 14 in the Jets Win.
