Jets Drop Both Games on Final Day at UCO-OC Festival

EDMOND, Okla. — The Newman University softball team battled the cold temperatures Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16) in the final day of the UCO-OC Festival. The Jets dropped both games, falling to Southwestern Oklahoma State 9-7 and suffered a tough 3-0 defeat to host school Central Oklahoma. The Jets fall to 1-4 in the early portion of the season.

Game 1 vs. Southwestern Oklahoma State

Emma Eck and Lacey Colvin got the Jets off to a quick start with RBI singles sparking the Jets to a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs responded back with five runs in the bottom of the half taking a 5-2 lead.

After trailing 7-2 headed to the third inning, the Jets rallied back with three runs in the third knotting the game up 7-7 on Bulldogs errors.

The Bulldogs rallied back with a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the 5th scoring the final runs as the Jets would strand a runner in the sixth and seventh, as Southwestern Oklahoma hung on 9-7.

Emma Eck lead the Jets with a solid game going 2-for-4 while driving in 4 RBI's and crossing the plate twice. Bailey Bugner, Lacey Colvin and Shanda Cox all recorded two hits apiece.

Game 2 vs. Central Oklahoma

In the second game of the day against Central Oklahoma, the Jets' offense was held quite only managing four hits in the brutal cool conditions.

Despite having opportunities in the early innings, the Jets would strand a runner in the top of the 1st and strand a pair in the top of the 2nd.

The Broncho's cashed in on a costly Newman error in the 2nd inning setting up the game's first runs on a 1-out 2 RBI single.

Despite a quick two outs to begin the 5th for the Jets, Lauren Kuhrt and Paige Wallace rattled back-to-back singles giving life to the inning, but the 2 out rally came up short.

The Brocho's tacked on another run in the 6th gaining a 3-0 lead. Bayley Horsch gave the Jets a brief sign of hope with a lead-off walk, however the Jets were unable to break through.

Paige Wallace led the Jets in the second game with a 2-for-3 performance as the Jets only managed four hits.
