Jets Fall Short in Heartland Conference Tournament

DeGrate and Potter earn All-Tournament team honors

TULSA, Okla. – The hopes of an automatic bid in the NCAA South-Central Region fell short as the Newman women's basketball team suffered a 78-51 defeat to No. 1 seed Lubbock Christian on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 10) in the Heartland Conference Championship. The loss drops the Jets record to 21-10 on the year, snapping their winning streak of seven straight

Bria DeGrate scored 18 points leading the charge for the Jets, adding in five assists and three rebounds. Kaitlyn Potter was the only other Jets player to reach double-digit scoring, tailing 13 points on 4-of-5 trifectas.

After the Jets scored the first two points of the game on an Abbey George jumper, the Lady Chaparrals went on a 17-2 run building a 17-4 lead and would go onto a 30-12 lead before the end of the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, Braxtyn Stewart sparked life into the Newman offense scoring six-straight points, four of which coming off a rare four-point play cutting the deficit to 40-22, but again LCU pushed the lead back to 47-24 with a 7-2 run. The Jets went into the halftime break trailing 47-28.

In the third and fourth quarters the Jets were held to just eight total field goals on 21 attempts finishing with their fifth worst shooting performance for the year at 35-percent. The Lady Chaparrals for the game finished 31-of-63 from the field posting a 49-percent performance. LCU would lead by as many as 30 in the fourth quarter.

The Jets were outrebounded 43-26 allowing 14 points to come off second chance opportunities.

Bria DeGrate and Kaitlyn Potter were named to the Heartland Conference Tournament team.

The Jets will now await to see if their season will continue as the NCAA DII women's basketball championship bracket will be revealed this evening (Mar. 10) at 10:00 p.m. (ET). Fans can watch the Selection Show online at ncaa.com/liveschedule
