Jets Get Big Production In Conference Split With The Hilltoppers

Austin, Texas – The Newman softball team split their road conference series with St. Edward's Saturday, the Jets dropped game one 10-2 and won game two 4-2. The Jets were able to get the conference split behind some good offense in game two.

 Game 1

The Hilltoppers were able to get on the board early in the bottom of the first, when Mica was able to double to center field scoring three Hilltoppers in the process. St. Edward's was able to add one more, later in the inning on a Rodriguez double to right field scoring Brant and giving the Hilltoppers the 4-0 lead early.

The Jets were able to cut it to three when Kameron Pope double to right field scoring Emma Eck who singled in the at bat before Pope. The Hilltoppers would come back and get the run right back in the second as Mica Single  scored Connelly for the 5-1 lead going into the middle of the game. The Jets would add another run in the top of the fourth but that wouldn't be enough for game one as the team fell 10-2.

Game 2

For the first two innings in game two the teams were scoreless looking to gain an advantage early, the Jets were able to do that as they were able to get a double from Lauren Kuhrt to left field scoring Lauryn Ogden who singled to lead off the inning. A Paige Wallace single to right field scoring Kurht gave Newman the early 2-0 lead.

Newman would get to big runs in the sixth as they were able to get a Lacey Colvin home run to left field and a Kameron Pope home run to right center for the 4-0 lead. The Hilltoppers would add two in the bottom of the inning but the Jets defense prevailed shutting down the Hilltoppers and getting the 4-2 victory and the split on the day.

Lacey Colvin's home run gives her five on the season for the team lead and tied for the team lead in RBIs with 11.

Chantel Purcella gave the Jets a great performance going seven strong with four strikeouts, one walk and one earned run.

The Jets are back at home Tuesday March 5 for a nonconference matchup with Bethany College with the first game starting at 3 p.m.
