Jets Extend Season's Longest Win Streak to Four Straight with Sweep of Bearcats

Wichita, Kan- The Newman University softball team cruised to their second sweep in as many days Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 20) over Southwest Baptist. The Jets improve to 8-15 on the season and stretch their winning streak to a season best four straight.

GAME 1:

Southwest Baptist started the scoring in the top of the second on Kori Hillenburg's sacrifice fly plating home Morgan McMullin in the top of the second.

Despite falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second, junior Lacey Colvin got things cooking on the offensive end with a lead-off double to center field followed up by an Emma Eck walk. Freshman, Jamie Compton gave Newman their first lead of the game 2-1, on a clutch two-out, two RBI single up the middle scoring.

In the top of the fifth, Lauren Kuhrt continued to cause havoc on the base paths swiping two of her games four steals after drawing a leadoff walk. Paige Wallace stretched the Newman lead to 3-1 on a safety squeeze bunt bringing home Kuhrt.

Bailey Bugner (2-4) got the nod in the circle for just the third time all season. Bugner pitched all seven innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out one in the winning effort. Despite walking two batters in the first frame, she bounced back solidly allowing just one more walk over the next six innings.

GAME 2:

Much like the first game, Southwest Baptist jumped out to the early advantage with a run in the first. Lacey Colvin got the two-out rally going in the bottom of the first delivering an RBI single scoring Katherine Stanford. The rally continued as the Jets took a 2-1 lead after back-to-back Bearcats errors. Bailey Bugner completed the four run first inning delivering a two-out triple down the right field line scoring Eck and Pope.

In the top of the third the Bearcats best scoring chance came on a single, however centerfielder Lauren Kuhrt had other plans throwing a frozen rope from dead center gunning the Bearcats baserunner Paige St. Pierre keeping the Jets in front 4-1.

The Jets tacked on an additional run in the fourth on the Bearcats fifth error of the game. The Jets kept the Bearcats scoreless over the final three innings completing the series sweep 5-1.

Dominique Payne (3-6) notched her second win in as many days pitching five total innings allowing one run on five hits, walking one and striking out five in the effort. Senior, Chantel Purcella came on to pitch two perfect innings in relief while recording a strikeout.

The Jets will return back to conference play on Friday (Mar. 22) as they head to Claremore, Okla. to face conference foe Rogers State.
