Jets Walk-Off Against Hilltoppers Earning Second Straight Series Win

Lauren Kuhrt notches first collegiate walk-off and home run

WICHITA, Kan. — Down to their final out, the Newman University softball team (12-31, 6-20) rallied back in walk-off fashion Saturday afternoon (Apr. 13) with a walk-off inside-the-park home run claiming their second consecutive conference series win 4-3, over the Hilltoppers of St. Edward's (14-23, 10-17).

After a quite first inning, Newman starter Chantel Purcella avoided major trouble in the second inning keeping the game scoreless, working around two costly Jet errors stranding SEU runners at second and third.

The Hilltoppers broke through with the game's first runs on a sacrifice fly that plated home two with a throwing error allowing the second run to come across. Lauren Kuhrt cut the NU deficit to one with an RBI single up the middle scoring Bayley Horsch who drew a one-out walk. Sophomore, Paige Wallace drew a 2-out walk setting the Jets up with runners on the corners after Kuhrt advanced to third on a wild pitch. Paige Wallace helped the Jets score the tying run on steal attempt to second base allowing Kuhrt to out run the throw attempt to home.

St. Edward's regained the lead back 3-2 with a leadoff home run to center field in the top of the fourth. The pitchers dual continued over the next three innings as neither squad was able to push across a run.

Looking to try and spark a seventh inning rally, the Jets got the tying run on base on a 1-out Horsch single. Pinch hitter, Anna Veltien struck out swinging leaving the Jets down to their final out with slap-hitter Kuhrt coming to the plate. After working the count from 0-2 back to 2-2 the freshman from Kingwood, Texas delivered a walk-off inside the park homerun down the left field line sending the Jets home in walk-off fashion 4-3.

Dominique Payne (7-10) earned the victory working 3.0-innings in relief allowing three hits walking one and striking out a batter in the effort.

The Jets will continued the homestead Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 16) against Rogers State. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. from the NU Softball Field in Wichita, Kan.
