Jets Finish Year on High Note, Sweeping FHSU

WICHITA, Kan. — Starting pitchers Dominique Payne and Bailey Bugner limited Fort Hays State to just seven hits and two runs Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 24) as the Newman University softball team finished their season in style sweeping the Tigers. The Jets rallied back scoring in the opener scoring four straight runs winning 4-2, before walking it off in the nightcap, 1-0 in eight-innings.

GAME 1

After falling behind 2-0 in the fifth inning, the Newman bats woke up after back-to-back Emma Eck and Lacey Colvin singles help load the bases with one-out. Senior, Bayley Horsch put the Jets on the board with a bases loaded RBI walk. A batter later, Kameron Pope delivered a bases clearing double to right center giving NU a 4-2 lead.

Starting pitcher Dominique Payne (10-11) avoided a FHSU 2-out single in the seventh, recording her 11th complete game of the season. Payne allowed just two runs on three hits, walking seven and fanning four FHSU batters in the winning effort.

GAME 2

In the second game, the Jets and Tigers were locked into a pitchers dual as Bailey Bugner and Hailey Chapman battled back-and-forth in the circle.

After being held to just one baserunner through two-innings, the Jets stranded a pair of opportunities in the third and fourth innings as the first two baserunners reached base.

Starting pitcher Bailey Bugner rolled through the first six-innings allowing just three hits. In the seventh inning, Bugner induced a bases loaded groundout keeping the game scoreless after allowing a single, walk and hit batter.

Still looking for the ballgames first run, Shanda Cox drew a leadoff walk to open the NU eighth. After a sacrifice bunt from Lauryn Ogden moving Cox to second base, the Jets called upon pinch hitter Dominque Payne. The senior only need three pitches as she laced a single to center field delivering the games lone run, walking it off for the Jets 1-0.

Bugner (3-12) tossed a rare 8.0-inning shutout allowing just four hits, walking five and striking out six in the victorious outing.
