Wichita, Kan. – On Thursday evening, the Newman Jets hosted the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats looking to snap a two game losing streak. A game that would end up going two overtimes where Northwest Missouri State would prevail over the Jets 70-67.
For the majority of this contest Newman and NWMSU were neck and neck with both teams largest lead being 5 points. In the final seconds of regulation, with the Jets trailing by two,
Kaitlyn Potter drove into the lane and made a layup to tie the game at 54 with three seconds left to force overtime. We would remain tied at the end of the first overtime with the score 59-59. In the second overtime, NWMSU would take a four point lead with 22 seconds left. A layup by
Kaitlyn Potter would cut the deficit to two with 10 seconds left 69-67. Northwest Missouri State (9-10, 4-6) would make one of two free throws to make the score 70-67 with 9 seconds left. Newman would have one last chance as
Kaitlyn Potter had a good look at a three but hit it off the back of the rim as Northwest Missouri State defeated Newman 70-67.
The Jets (9-12, 4-8) shot 24-of-57 for 42.1 percent from the floor, 5-of-14 for 35.7 percent from three and 14-of-16 for 87.5 percent from the free throw line. NWMSU shot 26-of-67 for 38.8 percent from the field and 9-of-31 for 29 percent from three. Newman out-rebounded Northwest Missouri State by 8, 40-32 with 9 coming from the offensive end.
Kaitlyn Potter led the Jets in scoring with 20 points and 7 rebounds.
Faith Mason-Vestal added 10 points and 9 rebounds in the Jets loss.
Newman will look to rebound as they host Missouri Western Saturday, February 1
st with tip-off slated for 1:30 P.M.
