PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Newman Jets traveled to Pittsburg, Kansas to take on the Gorillas of Pittsburg State, a game in which the Jets would fall to Pitt State 81-69.
In the first quarter, the Jets would find themselves in an early hole. After trailing by 10 points after the end of the first quarter, Newman would fight back to cut the deficit to 4 with 8:49 left in the first half. Leading 43-39 with 2:53 left in the first half, the Gorillas would score the final 4 points of the half to take a 47-39 lead at the half.
In the second half, after both teams would exchange baskets, Pitt State (8-5,4-1) would go on a 7-2 run to get their largest lead of the quarter at 11 points with 5:14 left in the 3
rd quarter. Newman would respond with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 6 with 4:19 left in the 3
rd quarter. The Gorillas would take an 8 point lead at the end of the 3
rd quarter. To begin the fourth quarter, Pitt State would go on a 10-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 16 points with 6:52 left in regulation. With 3:00 left and trailing by 15, the deficit was to much as Newman would fall 81-69.
Newman (7-8, 2-4) shot 27-of-59 for 45 percent from the floor, 11-of-18 for 61 percent from three and 4-of-5 for 80 percent from the free throw line. Newman held Pittsburg State to 32-of-61 for 52 percent from the field and 11-of-25 for 44 percent from three. Newman was out-rebounded by the Jennies by 11, 37-26, with 10 coming from the offensive end compared to Newman's 6.
Kaitlyn Potter led the Jets in scoring for the fourth game in a row with 22 points.
Brooke Haney added 10 points in the Jets loss.
Newman will travel to Joplin, Mo. as they take on Missouri Southern Saturday, Jan. 11
th with tip-off at 1:30 P.M.
