Jets Fall to Tigers 68-48

WICHITA, Kan. – On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Jets hosted Fort Hays State inside Fugate Gymnasium. The Tigers would hold on for the victory over the Jets thanks to a third quarter burst for a 68-48 win in Wichita. 

Newman would start the scoring off with a three point basket to gain the early advantage.  For most of the first quarter, both teams were exchanging baskets with one another but the Tigers would take a four point lead going into the second quarter.  For the beginning of the second quarter it continued to be a back and forth contest with neither team gaining much push against one another and we would go to the half with the Tigers leading the Jets 22-21.

In the beginning of the second half the Jets would score to get the lead with a jumper by Faith Mason-Vestal.  After that moment, the Tigers would take control of the game starting with a 12-0 run to lead by 11 with 6:14 left. The teams would exchange baskets until the Tigers closed out the third quarter and began the fourth on a 21-3 run taking a 53-32 lead. The Tigers would defeat the Jets 68-48.

The Jets (2-4, 2-4) shot 14-43 for 32.6 percent from the floor, 2-14 for 14.3 percent from three and 18-23 for 78.3 percent from the free throw line.  Newman (2-4, 2-4) held Fort Hays State to 24-60 for 40.0 percent from the field and 11-30 for 36.7 percent from three. Newman was out-rebounded by the Tigers by 6, 38-32, with 6 coming on the offensive end. 

Brooke Haney led the Jets in scoring with 19 points and 3 rebounds.  Faith Mason-Vestal added 12 points and 4 rebounds in the Jets loss.

Newman will conclude their homestand Saturday, December 19th as they host Central Oklahoma with tip-off coming at 1:30 P.M.
