EMPORIA, Kan. – For the first time this season, the lady Jets hit the road as they traveled up the turnpike to take on Emporia State Thursday night. Emporia State controlled the game from start to finish as they would hit 15 three point baskets on their way to defeating the Jets 80-56 inside White Auditorium.
In the first quarter, the Jets would start the scoring off with a three point basket by
Madison Birnbaum to give the Jets the early advantage. The teams would exchange baskets until the score was 7-7 when Emporia State ( 2-1, 2-1) would take control as they would go on a 11-0 run to end the quarter and they would take an 18-7 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Hornets would keep the run going as they would go on a 5-0 run before
Faith Mason-Vestal would end the run. Emporia State would continue to control the game to take a 42-23 lead into the intermission.
The second half would start with the Hornets scoring nine straight points to obtain their largest lead of the game, 28. The Jets would score the final four points of the quarter to trail Emporia State by 23 going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, both teams would go back and forth with neither team being able to string together any big runs as Emporia State would beat Newman 80-56.
The Jets shot 21-59 for 35.6 percent from the floor, 5-17 from three for 29.4 percent and 9-10 for 90.0 percent from the free throw line. While Emporia State shot 28-66 for 42.4 percent from the field and 15-32 for 46.9 percent from three. Newman was out-rebounded by the Hornets by 2, 38-36, with eight coming on the offensive end for the Jets.
Brooke Haney led the Jets in scoring with 10 points and 4 rebounds.
Faith Mason-Vestal added 9 points and 1 rebound in the Jets loss.
Newman (1-2, 1-2) will finish the road trip with a trip to Topeka, Kansas to take on Washburn on Saturday, Dec. 5
th, 2020 with tip-off at 1:00 PM.
