LAST TIME OUT
In the first quarter, the Jets would start the scoring off with a three point basket by Madison Birnbaum to give the Jets the early advantage. The teams would exchange baskets until the score was 7-7 when Emporia State ( 2-1, 2-1) would take control as they would go on a 11-0 run to end the quarter and they would take an 18-7 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Hornets would keep the run going as they would go on a 5-0 run before Faith Mason-Vestal would end the run. Emporia State would continue to control the game to take a 42-23 lead into the intermission.  The second half would start with the Hornets scoring nine straight points to obtain their largest lead of the game, 28. The Jets would score the final four points of the quarter to trail Emporia State by 23 going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, both teams would go back and forth with neither team being able to string together any big runs as Emporia State would beat Newman 80-56.

THE COACHES
Darin Spence begins his ninth season as the Jets head coach, leading the Jets to a 1-2, 1-2 in the MIAA record so far in the 2020-21 season. Spence has compiled a 591 wins as a head women's basketball coach over a 29-year span across NCAA Division I and Division II, NAIA, and NJCAA schools. His eight years with the Jets have seen him amass a record of 120-112 overall and a 59-53 mark in Heartland Conference play. Under Spence's tenure, the Jets reached the Heartland Conference tournament in six of his seven seasons. Before coming to Newman, Spence spent one season at Barton Community College and eight seasons at Division I New Mexico State.

Ron McHenry will begin his 21st season at Washburn in 2020-21 looking to continue to build on his impressive resume and return the Ichabods to the top of the MIAA and region.  McHenry, a national champion in 2004-05, has gone 464-152 (.753) in his first 20 years, all at Washburn since 2000-01. He's 272-106 (.720) in his career in MIAA games and 234-56 (.807) coaching in Lee Arena.  McHenry has won eight MIAA titles and seven MIAA tournament titles at Washburn. He's a four-time MIAA Coach of the Year and a two-time region coach of the year.

ABOUT THE JETS
Newman is 1-2 on the season, 1-2 in the MIAA. Newman is led in scoring by Senior Guard Brooke Haney at 10.0 points per game.  Madison Birnbaum leads the Jets in rebounding at 8.3 rebounds per game. Abbey George is only 8 rebounds away from being 2^nd in school history in rebounds in her career here at Newman.

ABOUT THE ICHABODS
Washburn is 1-2 on the season, 1-2 in the MIAA. The Ichabods are led in scoring by Nuria Barrientos at 14 points per game. Hunter Bentley leads the Ichabods in rebounding at 10.3 rebounds per game.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the twelfth all-time meeting between these two schools with the Ichabods leading the series 8-3 but the Jets have won two of the last three between these two schools.

LAST TIME VS WASHBURN
For the second game in a row, Newman would fall behind early as Washburn (10-8, 4-5) would go 4-9 from three in the first quarter to take an early 22-10 lead over the Jets.  In the second quarter, Newman would outscore Washburn 16-13, behind 7 points from sophomore forward Faith Mason-Vestal. The Jets trailed by 9 points going into the intermission, 35-26.  In the second half, Newman would continue to battle but Washburn would have an answer for every basket the Jets would make.  At the end of the third quarter, the Ichabods still maintained a 9 point lead, 51-42.  In the fourth quarter, Newman was able to cut the deficit to 7 with 9:43 left, after two Brooke Haney free throws.  After those free throws by Haney, Washburn would continue to control the game and defeat the Jets 70-53.

The Jets will return home to host Nebraska Kearney for another MIAA conference matchup on Thursday Dec. 10 with tip-off at 5:30 PM.
