WICHITA, Kan. - The Lady Jets were one win away from making it to Kansas City all they had to do was beat Fort Hays State Saturday Afternoon at home. Unfortunately for the Jets, they were unable to get the win as they would fall to Fort Hays State 74-48 on Senior Day.
In the first quarter, Newman would get the scoring started with a 3 point basket by
Kaitlyn Potter and two free throws by
Michaela Mack would give the Jets an early 5-0 lead. Fort Hays State (22-6, 13-6) would answer right back tying the game at 5 with 5:30 left in the quarter. Newman would respond by scoring the next four points to gain a 9-5 lead with 4:23 left in the quarter. Both teams would go back and forth for the remainder of the quarter with the Jets taking a two point advantage into the first break, 14-12.
In the second quarter, both teams would back and forth, until the 5:37 mark, when Newman would score the next five points to take a 27-22 lead with 3:49 left in the quarter. Fort Hays State would go on a 20-2 run to end the first half, taking a 42-29 lead at the intermission.
In the second half, Newman would get the first basket thanks to a
Faith Mason-Vestal layup to cut the deficit to 11 with 9:02 left in the third quarter. Fort Hays State would then score the next six points to gain their largest lead at 17 with 5:40 left in the quarter, 48-31. Newman continue to fight back, but Fort Hays State wouldn't let up as they took an 11 point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 50-39.
In the fourth quarter, Fort Hays State would go on a 9-0 run to start the quarter to extend their lead to 20 points, 59-39. The Jets would stop the run with a three point basket by
Braxtyn Stewart to cut the deficit to 17 at the 4:28 mark. Fort Hays State would continue to pressure the Jets as they would take their largest lead of the game, 26 points with 33 seconds left. That would be the final score in this contest as Fort Hays State would defeat the Jets 74-48 ending the Jets hopes of going to Kansas City.
Newman (11-17, 6-13) shot 18-of-57 from the field for 31.6 percent, 6-of-20 from three for 30 percent and 6-of-8 from the free throw line for 75 percent. Fort Hays State shot 22-of-57 from the field for 38.6 percent, 12-of-27 from three for 44.4 percent and 18-of-19 from the free throw line for 94.7 percent. The Jets were out rebounded by the Tigers by 9, 41-32.
