Jets go 2-2 at Drury Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Newman Jets softball team traveled to Springfield, Missouri to compete in the Drury Invitational but on by Drury University.  The Jets would go 2-2 including wins over Lincoln University 13-2 and host Drury 1-0.

The Jets would start the weekend taking on William Jewell.  William Jewell would strike first, in the bottom of the first inning scoring five runs thanks to three doubles and a single.  William Jewell would extend their lead in the bottom of the second tallying another five runs to take a 10-0 lead.  Newman would respond in the top of the third with a RBI double and a RBI single would plate two runs in for the Jets and would cut the deficit to 8, 10-2.  Newman would score another run in the top of the fourth with a RBI triple by Lauren Kuhrt would make the score 10-3.  William Jewell would put the Icing on the cake with a RBI double in the bottom of the fifth making the score 11-3 and finished off the Jets in five innings.

Newman would turn around and play MIAA conference foe Lincoln the same day. The Jets would strike in the top of the first on an RBI single from Shanda Cox that would score Lauren Kuhrt to give the Jets a 1-0 lead.  The Jets would finish there as they would score another run on a fielders choice scoring Cox giving the Jets a 2-0 lead.  Newman would extend there lead in the top of the second scoring three times, all were unearned runs, giving the Jets a 5-0 lead.  Lincoln would score twice in the bottom of the third making the score 5-2.  Newman would end the game scoring eight unanswered, 3 in the fourth and 5 in the fifth that would help the Jets defeat Lincoln 13-2 in five innings.
Emma Eck and Conkle each had 3 hits and 2 RBI's in the contest.  The Jets as a team collected 13 hits in the game. 

On Sunday, the Jets would finish the tournament playing two more games.  The first game on the day would come against another MIAA conference foe in Northwest Missouri State.  The Bearcats would strike first in this game scoring two runs in the first, five runs in the second, and one run in the third giving the Bearcats a 8-0 lead.  Newman would respond in the bottom of the third scoring three times thanks to a RBI bunt single by Cox and a 2 RBI double by Bugner would cut the deficit to 8-3.  The Bearcats would score three runs in the fourth with a homerun that would extend the lead to 11-3.  Newman would cut the deficit in the bottom of the fifth with a single by Lacey Colvin that would make the score 11-4.  The Bearcats would then score one run in the sixth with a solo homerun making the score 12-4.  The Jets would go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth as the Bearcats would defeat the Jets 12-4 in six innings.

In the final game of the tournament, Newman would take on host Drury.  Newman would strike in the first with a RBI single by Bugner giving the Jets a 1-0 lead.  This would be all the Jets needed as Anna Veltien would shutout the Panthers and give the Jets their fifth win of the season.

The Jets will be back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 4 as they host McPherson for a double header at 2:00 and 4:00 P.M.
