MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Jets, coming off a tough 6 point loss to Central Missouri, traveled to Northwest Missouri State for their first ever game in Bearcat Arena. Northwest Missouri State would defeat Newman in the second ever matchup between the two schools with a score of 57-47.
The Jets were able to jump out to a five point lead halfway through the first quarter, but the Bearcats would close out the half with five straight points to tie the game at 10 heading into the second quarter of play. After an early basket for NWMSU,
Faith Mason-Vestal would score four straight points followed by a three from
Madison Birnbaum to take the lead back for Newman 17-12 with a little over six minutes left in the opening half. After evening the score up, the Bearcats would score the final three points of the half to take a 23-20 lead into the intermission.
Northwest Missouri State (4-6, 4-6) would continue their momentum they finished the first half with as they would be able to build up a nine point lead, the largest for either team so far in the contest, with just over five and a half minutes left in the third quarter. The Jets would be able to cut the lead to just four points heading into the final period.
Brooke Haney would score a layup in the first possession for the Jets to make the NWMSU lead just two points. The Bearcats would stretch the lead back out to six points before
Faith Mason-Vestal would score two baskets split by a Bearcat made free throw to cut the lead back down to three points. NWMSU would then answer with three triples on three out of their four ensuing possessions to jump out to a 12 point lead with 2:30 left in regulation. Northwest Missouri State wouldn't look back after that as they would stretch the lead to as much as 14 in the final two minute before closing out the Jets 57-47.
Newman (3-8, 3-8) was led in scoring by
Faith Mason-Vestal with 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting. Mason-Vestal along with
Madison Birnbaum led the Jets with 5 rebounds apiece. The Bearcats would finish with three players in double figures: Jaelyn Haggard with 20 points, Molly Hartnett with 14 points and Jillian Fleming with 12 points. Newman shot 16-40 from the floor for 40 percent while the Bearcats shot 19-46 for 41.3 percent.
The Jets will be back in action on Monday, January 25
th as they take on Rogers State down in Claremore, Okla. with tip-off slated for 6:00 pm.
