WICHITA, Kan. – On Thursday night, the Lady Jets were looking bounce back after their loss Monday night at Rogers State as they hosted Washburn inside Fugate Gymnasium. Unfortunately for the Jets, they were unable to get the win as they would fall to Washburn 65-49.
Both teams would exchange baskets with one another to begin the game, with the score 6-4 in favor of the Ichabods, they would end the opening quarter on a 8-2 run to take a 14-6 lead going into the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Jets would be able to tie the game up at 22 before Washburn would end the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 28-22 going into the intermission.
In the third quarter, Washburn would take control and break away from the Jets outscoring Newman 23-11 in the quarter and taking an 18 point lead, 51-33 going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Ichabods would push the lead to 20 points, their largest of the contest and the deficit would be too much for the Jets to battle back from, as Washburn would defeat Newman 65-49.
The Jets shot 19-53 for 35.8 percent from the floor, 5-18 for 27.8 percent from three and 6-11 for 54.5 percent from the free throw line. Newman (3-10, 3-10) held Washburn to 26-62 for 41.9 percent from the field and 9-28 for 32.1 percent from three. Newman was out-rebounded by the Ichabods by 11, 42-31, with 6 coming on the offensive end.
The Jets were led in scoring by Faith Mason-Vestal with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Sydney Nilles added 9 points in the Jets loss.
Newman (3-10, 3-10) will host Emporia State on Thursday, Jan. 30th with tip-off at 1:30 PM.
